Bass Opener 2009
Well it's finally here the MN bass opener, this morning I am heading to Sylvia/Twin by South Haven because I have a Golden Hook Bassers club tournament there in a week. I have fished this lake about three years ago for a club tournament and did alright, I caught a lot of fish then. I figured I would check my primary spot which was a big sunken island on lake Sylvia, I was sure hoping the fish were here again because I knew just about everybody would be beating the bank. So as I arrived at the hump I stood up and grabbed my rod with a Spro Aruka shad 75 in Perch color, this lure is a lipless crankbait and I use this style of bait a lot to search for bass. On the third cast of the morning in aproximately 8' of water a fish loads up on my rod and it feels pretty good so the pessimest that I am I think it must be a Pike, then my line stared racing to the surface and a beautiful 4 pound bass leaps clear of the water and I net it and quickly relaease her and fire another cast out as fast I can, a few casts later I hook into another fish and this one is even bigger she went at least 5 lbs or more wow what a start to the day. As I worked around the hump I caught numerous fish most were pretty small but enough of 12" or more to fill a quick limit and I did catch a couple of two lb'ers and one about 3, this is all with in the first hour of the morning so I left to go find some other spots. As I pulled up on the end of a weed point I caught another 4 lb'er on the lipless crankbait, I moved immediatly and started fishing a bunch of different depths and lures for the rest of the. The fishing sure got a lot tougher for me after that 18 lb + power hour right away in the morning, I caught fish just about everywhere I went but they were very small. As you might guess were I will be starting come tournament time, all in all I am excited for the first club tournament of the year.
