Minnetonka Lake

JULY 2ND, 2008                      Minnetonka lake

Today I have a guided trip with a client that is up here from Memphis, Tennessee and his name is Brent Delo, Brent owns a online tackle store called Delo’s  Custom Tackle Shack and they carry all the high end hard to get stuff the pro’s use. www.deloscustomtackleshack.com

I picked up Brent from his hotel in Minnetonka and we proceeded to Lake Minnetonka and launched the boat, we had a little bit of a cold front move thru last night but with Brent being an accomplished angler himself mentioned it was probably going to be a tuff day of catching fish and I’m not going to lie it was tuff.

I think Brent was a bit shook up when I went ripping across the lake, he asked about it because all the reservoir’s down south have stump fields and tree’s scattered throughout the lakes, so I put him at ease when I told him there were none in Minnetonka just some underwater humps and we don’t have to worry about them.   As Brent and I arrived at my first spot which is a big weed flat, I started throwing a www.reactionstrike.com swimbait called a Fathead Jr. I was using the 5” version you should really check this company out, anyways Brent wanted to throw a spinnerbait so I tied on a www.leenalures.com ½ oz. unraveler it has three willowleaf blades on it, I caught a small bass on the swimbait and that was it on the whole flat which was very disappointing since I usually do well on this spot, not today though so I moved to another spot that is usually good for numbers of bass and quite a few pike also.

I switched up my tactics and started throwing an www.allterraintackle.com ½ oz. grassmaster jig with a Voodoo baits chunk on it, and Brent went with his own lure on a shakeyhead jig it was a rattlesnake worm made by El Grande lures, Brent says he fishes these everywhere he goes and has tons of confidence in it.   I believe he caught a bass on his first cast with it and then I caught a fish on my jig and we went back and forth catching 1-2 pound bass and a few pike thrown in.  Brent and I decided to go flip some milfoil and try for some bigger fish and as we were heading to a big milfoil bed and I saw a cut with some heavy cover in it and moved in slowly and started flipping my jig around and could not get bit it was very frustrating with all this cover, I figured with the cold front and all maybe they were tucked in tight to cover but I guess not, I was starting to think about moving on and as I flipped my jig into a mess of matted weeds and a downed tree I got BLASTED and set the hook hard and forced the fish out and landed her about a 41/2 pounder nice fish but I really wish Brent would have got her.

We are now fishing the milfoil bed and catching fish sporadically and none were very big and it was time to wrap it up and take my new friend Brent Delo back to his hotel, as I was grabbing his stuff out of the boat we were talking and just like that he put me on his PRO-STAFF so do me a favor and buy some stuff from him and tell them I sent you. Again it’s www.deloscustomtackleshack.com.
