Clearwater Lake

 June 7th 2008 CLEARWATER LAKE

This is a Golden Hook Bassers club tournament and I was originally fishing this one alone because we don’t have enough non-boaters in the club, but we had a guy contact our club president and ask if he could fish with us seeing as he was going to be in the area that day, I said I would be willing to let him fish with me, so we met at the landing this morning and introduced ourselves, his name is Clif Gallagher and he is a writer for a bass magazine out west and he is from Utah.

I decided to start the day on a big flat not to far from the landing, I was hoping to cover water fast and get a quick limit (5) of fish and then spend the rest of the day looking for big post spawn females. I started throwing a rattle bait and caught a keeper bass on my second or third cast of the morning and then a few casts later Clif netted another fish for me so far my plan is working out, I think because in the couple of weeks since I was last here the weeds started coming in much better anyways Clif says in a good humored way that if I can get him a limit to weigh in he would mention me and put my website address in the article he was writing for his magazine. I think within the next hour I had caught a couple more fish and Clif still had nothing to show, I offered him my exact lure I was using and he switched and in a short while he was hooked up with a fish and then I got bit also so we now have a double on and we both land them 5 fish for me and 1 fish for Clif. Granted the fish we were catching were small keepers so I suggested we move to another large flat and maybe some bigger fish are there so we moved.

As we got to this new spot Clif said it looked liked a perfect area for a spinner bait and asked if I had any he could borrow, I showed him my collection of Leena Lures Spinner baits and he sure read that right he caught a nice 2 lb’er almost right away and a million rock bass, he had never caught a rock bass before so he thought it was pretty fun and of course I am a smart ass, so the rest of the day I called him Rocky. Well he managed to catch two more largemouth with one being another 2lb’er so the spinner bait was catching a little better fish. With the morning coming to an end I figured now was the time to hog hunt.

The only thing I was going to throw lure wise was a www.allterraintackle.com jig and a www.reactionstrike.com swim bait which are both big fish lures. We made a move to a different part of the lake and I started throwing the Reactionstrike swim bait I had tied on and fished it around a point with know takers then while approaching a deep water dock a bass hammered my bait and Clif netted about a three pound bass for me so that was a nice upgrade. A short time later Clif hooked up with a small keeper for his limit and we had about an hour left to fish so we moved closer back to the landing and with about twenty minutes left I caught another nice bass and Clif caught a northern pike another first for him being from the west and all.

I ended up weighing a little over 11 pounds for 5 fish and coming in 6th place out of 21 other anglers and I made a new friend in Clif Gallagher we still are in touch every now and again.
