Here we go again the beginning of another tournament season, we are on Lake Wappogasset in WI. Bass opener is not until May 24th this year in MN. Our club The Golden Hook Bassers get antsi so we usually head over to WI so we can fish early.
    My prefish took place a week earlier. I could only do one day of practice for this one and have never been here, of course the weather was terrible, the wind blew hard straight down the lake the whole day, and it was cold. Anyway enough wining. My son A.J. came with and we decided to start on a weed flat up on the North ,and the water temp was 49 degrees. To start the morning, I wanted to cover some water so I started with a rattletrap type of lure, and on my 4th cast I set the hook into something really big. I knew it wasn't a bass, almost immediately this thing was doing what it wanted to. I thought I had hooked into my first big musky of the season. Well it turned out I somehow hooked a 5 pound pike in the belly and when that happens it always feels about 4 times larger because your bringing it in sideways. I gave the area about another 15 minutes with no action. Then started the hopscotching around to several different areas to try and figure the bass out. MY son and I fished hard all day and only caught 6 bass together, 3 each and only one would have measured in the tournament. They must be 14'' in Wisconsin, and A.J. caught that one about 15.5''-16'', so we were not feeling good about this lake or our practice. We could only hope for a major warm up in the next week and hope there is a big shift of fish moving up shallow, or we probably are not going to start the year out on a good note. Oh well what are you gonna do with 1 practice day?
