June 1st Lake Le Homme Dieu

Hi everyone,
Well I got up to Alexandria this morning about 5:30 am and I am the first boat here. Pretty shocking actually, I thought I was late getting started. Well my first place that I started was a large weed flat, water temp was 63 degrees after being up to the high 60's a week earlier. I figured I would try for some pre and post spawn fish away from the bank. First cast of the morning I catch a 2lb largemouth. Not a bad fish for this lake, five of them and your doing pretty good because there are millions of 1 to 1-1/2 lber's in this chain, so here I'm thinking "SWEET" then the 1 lber's start, so much for that idea. So I move up to the bank and start running the shoreline looking for spawners and all I see are abandoned beds, but fish with a homemade swim jig to cover as much water as I can and I continue to catch 1 to 1-1/2 lb fish. I'm thinking, man I have got to find something else to do, and just then I set the hook into a 4lb bass, it was in a patch of reeds out in front of a small bay with newly emerging lily pads. It's an awesome post spawn spot, no other takers out of the reeds, so I went into the bay and found more abandoned beds. It was a ghost town, no life at all (minnows, sunfish, crappie). So now I start running the lake and hitting different reed beds and can't catch anything over the 1-1/2 lb mark. To wrap up the day I had figured out the majority of the bigger fish were well into post spawn and were going to be tough to catch on tournament day, so I went back to the cabin to re-rig my rods for the tourney and settled on my game plan to catch a quick limit then fish some deep points with crankbaits.
